The Tauernradweg, or Tauern Cycle Path, takes you through the mystical mountain terrain of the Hohe Tauern, the birthplace of Mozart in Salzburg, and the historic salt mines in Hallein. It stands as one of the most beloved and diverse cycling routes in Europe, offering an array of cultural and culinary delights amidst stunning natural beauty, all set along meandering rivers and picturesque landscapes.
Details about the cycling tour along the Tauern Cycle Route
Your cycling tour starts in Salzburg and runs along the Salzach River. In Bad Dürnberg you can follow the traces of the "white gold" in the Hallein salt mines. Cultural sights are also covered during this bike tour. Visit the more than 900-year-old Hohen Werden Castle, which towers high above the Salzach Valley on a steep rock cone. If you prefer something cooler, you should plan a visit to the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.
The next stage is Kaprun where you can visit the Krimml waterfalls, with a height of 380 m, the Krimml waterfalls are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world. Your cycling tour continues through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the so-called Oberpinzgau. Highlights on the way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach. The last stage back to Salzburg leads through the always-quiet Saalachtal. Once you have reached Bad Reichenhall, it is only a short distance to the Mozart city of Salzburg.

Worth knowing about the Tauern Cycle Route
The Tauern cycle route is signposted everywhere and in great detail. The route mainly runs on quiet, paved bike paths and country roads, but sometimes also on busier parts, mostly paved bike paths. You cycle largely in the gentle valleys of the Salzach and Saalach with only slight slopes. Nevertheless, you should bring a little basic fitness with you, but then this bike tour becomes a real experience or opt for the convenience of an E-bike.
Arrival to Salzburg - the culturally rich city of Mozart. Take enough time for a stroll through the old part of the city and visit the Mozart´s Birthplace. Your bikes are available in the booked hotel.
Follow the course of the river Salzach. Soon you will reach Hallein. There you can visit the salt mines, which have been disused since 1989. The romantic ´Bluntautal´ is worth a visit, too. In today´s destination Golling you should allow plenty of time to visit the remarkable waterfall.
Today you cycle first to Werfen. There you will see the castle ´Hohenwerfen´. The well-known ice caves are worth a visit. In Bischofshofen you can admire the ski jump, where every year the final of the Four Hills Tournament is held. In St. Johann, you will see the well-known ´Lichtensteinklamm´, a huge spectacle with 50 m high waterfall at the end of the gorge.
You will soon reach Bruck and the entrance to the ´Großglocknerstraße´ (High Alpine Road). From the beginning of July, there are buses to the 3,797 m high Großglockner, Austria´s highest mountain, which stops at ´Franz-Josephs-Höhe´. The sportier bikers have the opportunity to cycle around Lake Zeller (Zeller See) and the cosy cyclists can use it as a refreshing dip. You just have to ride a short distance and then you will have reached Kaprun, today´s destination. There you have excellent bus connections to the high mountain reservoirs.
After breakfast take the ´Pinzgaubahn´ to Krimml and visit the largest waterfalls in Europe. On a well-designed trail, you can admire this natural spectacle. While cycling through the ´National Park Hohe Tauern´ and the so-called ´Oberpinzgau´, you will see the snow-capped 3,000 m high mountains all the time.
Note: The ´Pinzgaubahn´ was severely damaged in a storm in 2021. The repair is not yet complete. At this point in time, the work is likely to continue into 2024. In this case, there is a rail replacement service or a bus shuttle as a replacement.
Very quickly you will be back at Lake Zeller where you can take again a relaxing bath. After cycling through ´Maria Alm´ with its famous pilgrimage church you will reach Saalfelden, where you can enjoy your lunch break. Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the ´Seisenbergklamm´ and ´Lamprechtshöhle´ near Weißbach.
On your last day you will cycle through the quiet ´Saalachtal´ back to Salzburg. The Bavarian Bad Reichenhall in the small German Angle will enchant you with a Bavarian flair. After cycling a short distance, you will have reached Salzburg, the starting point of your tour, again. In the evening you can enjoy a culinary dinner and review the impressions and experiences you had on your bike trip.
