Switzerland is recognised as one of the best places for a hiking holiday in Europe with awe-inspiring natural beauty and varied mountain landscapes.
Shaped by glaciers, lakes and mountain valleys, the country is a chance to experience spectacular views, outstanding public transport and fresh mountain air.
There are over 65,000 kilometres of marked trails and an extensive network of hiking paths that are a combination of challenging and more easy-going depending on your walking ability and skill levels.
The Swiss Alps are by far the most popular region for a hiking holiday and we have walking tours that showcase the very best of this unforgettable country.
The Via Albula and Bernina Trek is a scenic hiking trail in the Swiss Alps. The route starts in the small town of Thuis in Graubunden and goes all the way to St Moritz. The trail is approximately 130 kilometres long. The route is a UNESCO World Heritage route and runs close to the Bernina Express railway route.
You'll get to experience the different languages spoken along the route and get close to the impressive railway architecture of the Rhaetian Railway. The wild natural landscapes that you'll hike along have been shaped by both nature and railway engineers.
This is a unique walking tour in that you are never far away from the railway line and you can board the train at any time should the going get tough.
The Via Alpina Bear Trek is a unique hiking experience in Switzerland. Challenging, but rewarding at the same time, the walk takes you to some of the most stunning mountain landscapes in the whole country. Brown bears were once extinct in Switzerland, but they have slowly returned to their natural habitat.
The trek is part of the larger Via Alpina network and the 190-kilometre route will take you through several National Parks including the Swiss National Park.
Whilst hiking on the route, you'll see the famous Swiss mountains of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau which are awe-inspiring and you'll also have time to explore the towns and villages nearby. These include Meiringen, Grindelwald, Wengen and Abelboden.
The Mont Blanc Massif in France is one of the most iconic mountain ranges in the world. Situated in France, Italy and Switzerland, the 'roof of Europe' is known for its mountain peaks, sweeping glaciers and sublime alpine landscapes.
At around 4,810 metres, the Mont Blanc massif extends over parts of France, Italy and Switzerland and forms the ‘roof of Europe’. Mont Blanc is not only the highest mountain in the Alps but also in the European Union and 24 peaks in the mountain group sit at over 4,000 metres above sea level.
The Mont Blanc region is the ultimate hiking area for those looking for a challenge and a test of their trekking abilities. We have the full tour as well as the shorter Western and Eastern sections. Luggage transfers are included on all tours.
Fully-organised walking holidays are the best way to walk or hike in new surroundings along some of Europe's most popular and lesser-known walking trails in a confident way.
We have a wide selection of walking tours available across Europe, but all of our hiking holidays have several things in common such as luggage transfers and pre-planned routes.
We've highlighted several reasons why you should go on a self-guided walking holiday in our overview video.
