From Dresden, your journey begins with a captivating day trip to Saxon Switzerland, where you'll be immersed in the stunning natural beauty of the region. The following day, your cycling adventure leads you from Dresden through the picturesque Elbe Valley, taking you through Radebeul before arriving in the charming town of Meißen. As you continue your exploration, you'll follow the winding path of the Saxon Wine Route, a delightful route that showcases Germany's northernmost vineyards, leading you to the town of Riesa.

Your cycling adventure then follows the serene banks of the Elbe River, leading you to the historical town of Torgau. From there, your journey takes you to the Luther town of Wittenberg, where you can walk in the footsteps of the iconic reformer Martin Luther, exploring the rich history and heritage of the area.

Continuing on your route, you'll arrive in Dessau, a city known for its association with the influential Bauhaus movement and the famous architect Walter Gropius. Here, you can delve into the legacy of Gropius and explore the architectural wonders that have left an indelible mark on the city.

Itinerary

Opportunity to stroll through the baroque old town of Dresden. Discover the world-famous beauty and magic of this city with its unique sights such as the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche, the castle and the Semper Opera House.

 

The cycle path leads directly along the Elbe to the baroque Pillnitz Palace and continues upstream along the Elbe to the rugged sandstone cliffs of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It's worth making the short climb up to the Bastei Rock. The return journey from Bad Schandau to Dresden can be done either by bike (approximately 90 km) or by S-Bahn (approximately 45 km).

Today's cycle tour takes you through the romantic Elbe valley, passing the Saxon vineyards and the town of Radebeul, closely associated with the name of Karl May. Soon, you'll arrive in Meißen, world-famous for its porcelain. The picturesque alleys of the historic town centre are perfect for leisurely strolls and shopping. Don't miss the opportunity to visit Albrechtsburg Castle and the renowned Meissen porcelain factory.

On the banks of the Elbe, the path continues through the northernmost vineyards of Germany along the Saxon Wine Route. Take the opportunity to savour regional wines! For those who prefer culture, the baroque Diesbar-Seußlitz Castle, with its picturesque park, offers the perfect ambiance. Your overnight stay tonight will be in the sports city of Riesa.

Continue following the Elbe downstream to the town of Mühlberg, known for its former Cistercian monastery and the Electorate of Saxony's historic post office column. Those with an interest in botany should make a point to visit the Treblitz tree park, which boasts trees and shrubs from five continents. Just a short distance away lies the town of Torgau, featuring its well-preserved town hall, a Renaissance building, the Hartenfels residential palace, and the late Gothic St. Mary's Church, the final resting place of Katharina Luther.

The castles of Lichtenberg and Pretzsch mark the journey towards Wittenberg. Upon arriving in the town where Martin Luther posted his theses, you'll have the opportunity to trace his footsteps. Luther Hall houses the world's largest collection on the history of the Reformation. Wittenberg's old town has also been beautifully restored, and its charming shops and pubs make an evening stroll a delightful experience.

From Wittenberg, the route continues along the Elbe. After just a few kilometres, you will find yourself immersed in the World Heritage Site of the Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, a spacious and charming park landscape dating back to the 18th century. Dessau awaits with the Bauhaus buildings designed by Walter Gropius in the mid-1920s, known for their unmistakable functional style elements.

The daily stages range from 25 to 85 km in mostly flat to slightly hilly terrain. The Elbe Cycle Route provides the opportunity to trace one of Germany's most beautiful and historically significant rivers without the need for a car. In some sections of the route, you'll travel along smaller country roads and less frequented paths, exploring the diverse landscapes along the river.
