Worth knowing about the Piedmont bike tour
In eight days you will cycle through Piedmont, the cradle of truffles, wine and chocolate. Usually, you travel on back roads with little traffic. On the shorter stages on days three and four, there is plenty of time for fun stops. The route is ideal for ambitious holiday cyclists because the route is generally quite hilly with short, but also steeper passages. The itinerary covers between 35 and 50 kilometres per day.
Morning transfer by bus or train to Superga. From the basilica you can enjoy a beautiful view over Turin and as far as the Alps. The beautiful cycling route leads through colourful vineyards from one typical village to another. You will spend the night in a typical country house in Piedmont, where an authentic evening menu from the region will be prepared for you.
More and more vines accompany you on your route. You will pass small mountain villages, with breathtaking views of the Piedmont countryside stretching out in front of you. Overnight in Asti, a city full of culture. Famous not only for the sparkling wine of the same name, but also for the well-known Palio competition, in which the districts compete for the win for that year during the horse race.
Today it goes right through the wine-growing region of Asti. Each of the villages has its own tradition and of course, invites you to taste it. On the medieval square in Nice Monferrato, be sure to take a cappuccino break before cycling towards your overnight address. You spend the night at an agriturismo with its own vineyard, where you can also enjoy culinary specialities in the evening.
Magnificent views over the famous vineyards characterize today's cycling route. In Neive you walk through one of the most beautiful old towns in Italy and in Barbaresco you are in the (next to Barolo) probably the most famous wine town of Piedmont. However, your destination is the medieval town of Alba, where the best quality white truffle, so beloved by gourmets from all over the world, grows.
In the beginning, you will cycle in the Roero region, known for its strong red wines. You can also taste these, for example, in the “Enoteca del Roero” in Canale. Then on over small streams and through deep green forests to Montafia. Matching the rural environment, you will again spend the night in a beautiful agriturismo including a typical local dinner.
Along the way, you will pass small, sleepy villages and the many vines will make you hungry again for a small glass. In Chieri, with its beautiful squares and cosy alleys, you should take a break before cycling the last kilometres along the river Po. Far too soon the starting point of the journey, beautiful Turin, is reached again.
