Details of the Luxembourg to Koblenz cycling holiday

This variation along the Moselle River starts in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Starting your cycle trip in this multicultural metropolis you will cross an impressive landscape with some hilly sections as far as Remich, well known as the pearl on the river Moselle.

This small town at the foot of the vineyards is located directly on the shore of the Moselle and is still an important wine- and trade centre. The picturesque urban quarters as well as the old alleys are evidence of a great historic past. Passing Trier this cycle trip will follow always the river Moselle as far as Coblenz, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine River.

Numerous vineyards on both sides of the river and breathtaking natural landscapes will constantly accompany you and promise delightful cycle tours. On this bike trip, you follow a more than 2000-year-old Roman history, in the true sense of the word. Thereby you cycle through historical cities and charming villages and get to know the famous fruity wines you can taste.

Itinerary

We recommend an early arrival in the European Capital of Culture 2007. Nowhere else do contemporary buildings harmonise so subtly with the ruins of former castles and palaces. Luxembourg City has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for many years. Numerous theatres and museums will delight anyone with an interest in culture. Your bicycles will be delivered to the hotel the next morning.

After a hearty breakfast, you will leave the capital of the Grand Duchy, following the course of the Alzette River, which will guide you out of the city hustle and bustle without difficulty. The landscapes and small villages that you will pass on today's stage will compensate for the one or other climb that has to be mastered. Your stage destination Remich exudes southern flair and you can relax with a glass of wine on the Moselle promenade.

From Perl onwards, the Moselle forms the German-Luxembourg border. On both sides of the river, the first vineyards appear, which will often accompany you on your way to Koblenz and provide a wonderful panorama. Via Konz, where the Saar flows into the Moselle, you will finally reach your destination for today. In Trier, you can experience and understand 2000 years of history up close.

After an extensive tour of the city with all its highlights such as the Porta Nigra and the amphitheatre, the tour continues along the beautiful Moselle. An educational wine trail tells you about the local grape varieties. Shortly before Piesport, you cycle through Neumagen-Dhron, Germany's oldest wine village. Why not taste a glass of wine in your stage town, certainly a nice way to end this cycling stage!

Soon you will reach Bernkastel-Kues, where the numerous small alleys and the colourful half-timbered houses are impressive. Of course, you should taste the famous "Bernkastler Doctor". Your further cycle tour now takes you through the wine-growing area "Kröver Nacktarsch". You have completed your daily workload with Traben-Trarbach.

Today you will again be accompanied by numerous vineyards on both sides of the Moselle. In Enkirch, a jewel of Moselle half-timbered architecture, you should take a short break. Continuing along the Moselle, you already reach the next widely known wine-growing area, the "Zeller Schwarze Katz". Finally, via Beilstein, also known as the Rothenburg on the Moselle, you reach your destination for today's stage, Cochem. You should definitely visit the charming centre as well as the Reichsburg Castle, which dates back to the 11th century.

A detour to the medieval Eltz Castle, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and best preserved in Germany, is definitely worthwhile. Situated in the midst of nature, it bears witness to fairytale beauty and offers breathtaking views. Back on the Moselle Cycle Path, you will again pass numerous pretty wine villages on your last stage before reaching Koblenz, the final destination of this wonderful cycle tour. The city centre is located at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers and is perfect for a final city stroll.

Departure from Koblenz or spend extra nights in the city or surrounding region.

Route map and overview

On the first stage, you have to expect some hilly landscape. You cycle on country roads with little traffic, but always on paved terrain. From Remich you follow the Moselle Cycle Path, which is mostly on cycle paths and paved and asphalted roads. Only a few short passages have a little more traffic. The Moselle Cycle Path is signposted throughout and is excellent. All in all, this is a relatively easy cycle tour that can be easily completed with a basic level of fitness.
