Details about the cycling holiday from Sagres to Vila Real

The small, charming coastal town of Sagres with its impressive fortress is the starting point of our cycle tour along the Algarve. From here you will explore what is probably the sunniest coast in Europe and come across stage locations that are well worth seeing, secluded bays and romantic sunsets.

Take every opportunity that presents itself to you to dare a cooling dip in the sea on a kitschy-beautiful beach. Via Lagos, Portimao, Albufeira, Faro and Tavira you finally reach Vila Real de Santo Antonio, near the border with Spain.

Highlights of the Algarve cycling holiday at a glance:

  • Lagos: In the 14th and 15th centuries, the small port town of Lagos was the starting point for many voyages of discovery, such as those by Vasco da Gama.

  • Capela dos ossos: The small chapel in Faro, which was built from bones and over 1200 monks' skulls, is intended to remind us of the transience of man.

  • Squid in Tavira: The area around Tavira is known for its delicious squid dishes.

Itinerary

Explore the coastal town with its impressive fortress or enjoy the nearby beaches.

The very first bike tour takes you to a special highlight, the famous lighthouse at Cape St. Vinzenz, the most southwestern point in Europe. From the cliffs rising vertically out of the Atlantic, almost 75 meters high, you have a spectacular view of the sea and can hear the crashing waves.

You cycle over gentle hills to the fishing village of Salema and on to the Burgau beach. You will be impressed by the famous Ponta da Piedade just outside Lagos, a magnificent natural monument and one of the most famous postcard motifs in the Algarve. In the lively port city of Lagos, you can review the exciting day with a good glass of wine.

The beach of Meia offers you today the first opportunity to take a dip in the refreshing sea. At low tide, you can observe countless shellfish collectors in search of delicacies. In Odiáxere it is worth visiting the 16th-century church and in Alvor, it is worth strolling through the Morabito de São Pedro city market and through the narrow streets of the old town.

Here, treat yourself to a break in a typical restaurant with freshly caught fish. With fantastic views over the sea, you continue cycling along the coast. Spend some time on the beautiful sandy beach of Praia da Rocha before arriving in Portimao, your overnight accommodation, in the afternoon.

To start, the cycle path accompanies you along the Arade River to the village of Ferragudo with its beautiful church and magnificent views over the estuary. We continue past olive, cypress, orange, fig and cork oak trees to Lagoa. There you should try traditional Portuguese pastries and visit the Senhora da Rocha chapel, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. Extensive sandy beaches are on the way to one of the most famous holiday resorts in the Algarve. Albufeira is also your stopover point.

In the fishing village of Olhos de Água there is a beautiful beach where you can take a break. Breathe in the fresh sea air and enjoy the fine sand under your feet. In Vilamoura you pass one of the largest marinas in the country and then cycle through the pine forests towards the Ria Formosa Nature Park, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. Faro, the capital of the Algarve, appears in the distance. Discover the famous old town with its nice restaurants and lively streets.

The cycle path continues through the Ria Formosa nature park. The offshore islands are always in view, and the few clouds over the Atlantic are reflected in the salt lakes. In Olhão, you can stop for coffee at the busy market while watching the locals go about their daily errands. Afterwards you cycle comfortably to the fishing village of Fuseta with its typical white houses. Today's cycling day ends on the venerable Roman bridge in the city center of Tavira. Enjoy the evening in one of the most beautiful and typical towns in the Algarve.

The Ria Formosa Natural Park with its lagoons is still your companion today. You roll through the pine forest of Monte Gordo beach and the dune forest of Vila Real de Santo António to the border of Portugal and Spain. Follow the river Guadiana a bit north before you cycle back towards Tavira over gentle hills, past orange and olive groves. At the latest now you should toast to a successful and very eventful bike tour.

Departure from Tavira or spend extra nights in the city or surrounding region.
