The oldest salt mine in the world, an Imperial City, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Salzkammergut is a region that amazes you. Hike with us along magical lakes, delightful places, imposing mountain ranges and through unique nature.

Details about the hiking holiday in the Salzkammergut

Swimming in the Wolfgangsee or riding on Austria's oldest cogwheel train to the Schafberg – on your arrival day you will be spoiled for choice and that’s a good thing! The first hike takes you over the Falkensteinwand (the view!) to charming St. Gilgen and back again by boat. On day 3, you hike comfortably over the Schwarzensee and the Wirerschlucht to the Imperial City of Bad Ischl.

During the second half of the tour, you will hike along the oldest salt path in the world. The hike to the Hohe Wand is spectacular, and the planned boat trips on Lake Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee are relaxing. The Nussensee and Blinklingmoos are places where nature seems almost untouched and the soul can set itself free.

Highlights of the Salzkammergut walking holiday:

  • World-famous lakeside towns of St. Wolfgang & Hallstatt: These two unforgettable towns in the region offer picture postcard landscapes. If you stroll through the alleys to the Weißen Rössel and the like, you know why this traditional place was allowed to serve as a famous film set. Hallstatt is no less impressive with its unique location between mountains and lake and the delightful baroque architecture.

  • The Imperial City of Bad Ischl: The atmosphere in Bad Ischl still feels imperial today. From the villa to the spacious spa gardens to the thermal baths, this place is a real gem.

  • World Cultural Heritage Sites Hallstatt-Dachstein: Beauty, industry and science characterise this region, which has lived from salt mining for almost 3,000 years and which made it an international trading centre in the past. As early as the 19th century, visitors enjoyed this unique region, a fascination that remains.

  • Hiking in a fascinating mountain landscape: You can say that the Salzkammergut is one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Hiking in this region is pure enjoyment.

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival at Lake Wolfgangsee

On your walk along a walking trail to Falkenstein rock wall, you enjoy beautiful views of the lake. An idyllic path along the lake takes you into Mozart village St. Gilgen. Return by boat.

From St. Wolfgang on Saddle walk to Lake Schwarzensee. Here the lake cabin of Lore is worth a stop for the delicious homemade snacks. Via Wirer gorge into the valley and around Bürglstein to the lake promenade of Strobl. By coach into the ancient Imperial summer residence Bad Ischl.

Use your free time to explore the many places of interest in Bad Ischl. ‘Kaiservilla’ Emperor Franz Josef’s summer residence, Café Zauner with famous delicacies or a visit to the Salzkammergut thermal spa.

Salt always has been an essential source of income in Salzkammergut. The oldest brine pipeline in the world leads from Hallstatt’s salt mine to the salt works in Bad Ischl. Walk along the promenade into Kaltenbachau, a site of Imperial pleasures such as horse races, picnics and rendezvous. On the brine pipeline trail to Bad Goisern, the gateway to UNESCO heritage Hallstatt. By train to Hallstatt. If you want to walk a little higher, you can hike on the spectacular mountain trail of the “Eternal Wall”.

Continue on the brine pipeline trail to the salt mountain in Hallstatt (the salt mine dates back to Celtic times). Here you enjoy a scenic view of the lake and Dachstein massif. Plan a visit to the salt mine, enjoy the views from the top of Rudolf’s tower and visit the excavation sites.

Departure from St. Wolfgang or spend extra nights in the surrounding region.
