From the tranquil Olympic city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you hike in the direction of South Tyrol. You travel through the region of Tyrol until you finally arrive in Merano. In addition to impressive high valleys, thundering gorges and rustic mountain pastures, the charming mountain huts invite you to linger. Hearty Tyrolean delicacies, South Tyrolean Specialities and Italian wine sweeten this hiking tour through three countries.

Details about the Alps crossing from Garmisch to Meran

Raging falls tumble down over the rocks. At the side, rustic wooden steps lead through the impressive Partnachklamm Gorge until you reach the Elmbau Alm in Tyrol via the Wamberg. Past blooming meadows, sparkling mountain lakes and overlooking the sugared Alps you travel step by step to the next destination.

On day five, tired hiking feet can recover for a short time. A shuttle will drive you over the Reschenpass, and a cable car will take you to the Mutzkopf, from where hikes to the Schwarzsee and Grünsee will continue.

At the end of the hiking tour, you will reach Italian Meran. The Mediterranean climate with its plants and magnificent cathedral square immerses you in the atmosphere of this South Tyrolean spa town.

Highlights of the hiking tour from Garmisch to Meran

  • The sunken church of the Reschensee: The Reschensee in Vinschgau is six kilometres long. It sits in the mountain scenery of the quaint Langtauferer Valley. And in the middle of the crystal-clear water, you will find a sunken church tower. It’s worth a visit to find out about the tower in the lake!

  • The Sisi city of Meran: A magical little spa town that was once considered a luxury resort. The reason: Austrian Empress Sisi paid a visit to the pretty city in 1870.

  • Three countries in one tour: From Germany to South Tyrol/Italy, you are travelling through three countries, and each is more impressive than the last.

Itinerary

The famous Olympic town Garmisch-Partenkirchen beckons you to explore: discover the beautiful pedestrian zone, the traditionally painted houses and cosy beer gardens.

Walk past the renowned ski-jumping hill and through the imposing Partnachklamm-ravine, where a roaring mass of water has dug deep into the rock. Via Mount Wamberg you walk to the Elmauer Alp and continue through blooming meadows and valleys to Lake Lauter- and Lake Ferchensee. You stay overnight in Mittenwald, renowned for violin making and ‚Lüftlmalerei‘ (a kind of trompe l’oeil on houses).

Today you leave Bavaria and head for the Tyrolean mountain world! The Geisterklamm-ravine situated high above a gorge awaits for you to walk through it on bridges and footbridges. After that, you hike through a splendid high mountain valley, which is also the location of the popular holiday destination Leutasch, surrounded by mountain chains.

Remote hill moor areas and forests lead you to the crossover onto the ‚Buchner Höhe‘. Past walls of rock of the ‚Hohen Munde‘ along a beautiful hiking trail downhill into the green Inn-river valley. From the historic market town Telfs, you take the train, which takes you to your Day Finish Landeck with views of the famous mountains with glaciers of the Ötztaler and Pitztaler Alps.

Transfer onto the Reschen-pass and by cable car to Mutzkopf, where you start your hike to Lake Schwarzsee and Lake Grünsee. You ascend as far as the three-nation border stone, where you get to stand exactly on the border between Italy, Austria and Switzerland. You descend via the alps to the giant Lake Reschensee, with your same-named Day Finish Reschensee. Welcome to Italy!

Short bus journey along Lake Reschensee with a view of the sunken church of Graun to the trailhead. The hiking tour in the nature reserve on Lake Haidersee leads you downhill into the Alpine dairy village of Burgeis and then via diverse paths across meadows and ‚Waalweg‘-paths (ancient water channels) to Schluderns and by train through vineyards and orchards to Naturns.

You walk along a panorama trail with great views all the way to the streams of the ‚Sagenweg‘-path. Along the many Waalweg-paths traditional wine taverns invite you again and again to have a break. In the afternoon you reach the ‚Tappeiner Promenade‘, whose exotic floral splendour you follow as far as the cathedral square of Meran. Now you have reached the end destination of your impressive hiking week and get to toast to your experiences in the pretty centre of Meran.

Departure from Meran or spoend extra nights in the city or surrounding region.
