This hiking tour not only leads through two countries (Austria and Germany) but also connects two lakes that couldn’t be more beautiful and unique. The picturesque Königssee and the large, stately Chiemsee. In between, there are lush alpine meadows, rustic huts and idyllic mountain villages.

Details about the mountain hiking holiday between Lake Konigssee to Lake Chiemsee

After a journey of discovery at the Königssee in Bavaria you start! On the way to Lofer, take a look at the Hintersee before heading to Austria at the Hirschbichl. On day 3, a circular hike including a natural bathing area, pilgrimage church and impressive panoramas is planned, before day 4 goes over beautiful green alpine pastures to Reit and Winkl.

The lively Reit im Winkl invites you to stroll and enjoy, but of course, hikes are also possible on this day, for example to the Fellhorn or Weitsee. Over the green, glittering Taubensee it does into the Achental and finally over the famous Kampenwand to the Chiemsee.

Highlights of the Lake Konigssee to Lake Chiemsee walking holiday

  • Mountain idyll on the Königssee with a view of the Watzmann: It is a germ among the lakes – equally beautiful and also a bit mysterious. Due to its location, it is best explored by boat. The world-famous St. Bartholomä with the unmistakable pilgrimage church is not only a great photo opportunity but also a great spot for refreshment and a cultural highlight.

  • Berchtesgaden National Park: ‘Let nature, be natural’ – that’s the motto of the 210 km2 national park around Watzmann. You notice that here with every breath and all of your senses.

  • Sparkling lakes, rushing gorges: Whether it is the Seisenbergklamm or Vorderkaserklamm – the impressive gorges where water shoots through were created thousands of years ago and have not lost their fascination to this day.

  • The Chiemsee is also known as the ‘Bavarian Sea’: The view leads endlessly over the water and its islands, above all Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee. Both islands are worth a visit, particularly the impressive castle on Herrenchiemsee and the Benedictine Abbey on Frauenchiemsee, which is known for the production of marzipan and liqueurs.

Itinerary

Day
1
Arrival in Königssee/Berchtesgaden

Relaxed walking tour past lake Hintersee penetrating deep into National Park Berchtesgaden. Impressive scenery along the way. To the right are the summits of Reiter Alpe and to the left were mighty Hochkalterer mountains. Across alpine pastures and past the border at Hirschbichl, then down through white water gorge Seisenbergklamm into Saalach valley. Bus fare to Lofer.

Short bus ride to the Saalachtal Valley. Follow the Saalachtal valley to Lamprechts cave (the longest passage cave of Europe) and continue to St. Martin, home of the pilgrim church ‘Maria Kirchtal’. Walk up to the church in an idyllic side valley closely along the walls of Loferer Steinberge. On this beautiful trail, you will soon reach the town Lofer, surrounded by numerous impressive mountain ranges.

Take the cable car up to Loferer Alm, where a high-altitude path to the Steinplatten massif starts. Walk across alpine pastures and a lovely mountain forest to Loferer Steinplatte. The idyllic alpine pasture Winklmoos Alm is an ideal stop for a Bavarian ‘Brotzeit’. Well sustained you take the bus to Reit im Winkl.

Enjoy a tranquil day in the well-known holiday resort ‘Reit im Winkl’. Take a circular hike and follow our hiking tip through the Klausenbachklamm gorge. In the afternoon, a visit to the schnapps museum and a stroll through the tranquil Bavarian village is worthwhile.

The ‘Eye of Lake Chiemsee’ is the poetic name of Lake Taubensee. This is easily understood when you see this idyllic mountain lake, nestling in a little basin of Rauhe Nadel on 1138 m. A fantastic walk from the alpine pasture to the alpine pasture and downhill into the valley of Achental awaits you.

After a short ascent, you walk through the forests up to the alpine pastures on Hochplatte and then to Kampenwand with views over Lake Chiemsee. Continue on a trail from cabin to cabin beneath Kampenwand, which has a beautiful 12-meter-high iron cross at the top. You will take the comfortable cable car down to Aschau, where you take a short train ride to ‘Prien’, located at Lake Chiemsee.

Departure from Lake Chiemsee or spend extra nights in the surrounding region.
