A unique hiking holiday combining trains and trails
The hiking trail runs along the Albula and Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway and offers enchanting views of the magnificent alpine landscape again and again, as well as of the 120-year-old railway line. Countless bridges and spectacular viaducts blend harmoniously into the landscape and the railway line is quite rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first part of the hiking route leads from Thusis, north of the Alps, through the Albula Valley to Val Bever and through the Upper Engadine to St. Moritz. The southern section finally takes you over the Bernina Pass into Val Poschiavo and, last but not least, you hike to Tirano in the Italian Valtellina.

The highlights of the Via Albula and Bernina walking holiday at a glance:
UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway: In July 2008, the Albula and Bernina line was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A real speciality, after all, there are only two other railway lines that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Semmering Railway in Austria and the Mountain Railways of India.
Centuries of railway history: this hiking trail along the Albula and Bernina line takes you along a true masterpiece of railway construction. The mountain railway was opened as early as 1896 and has since overcome enormous differences in altitude of more than 5,000 metres.
Culture and cuisine of two countries: On our cross-border hiking tour Via Albula & Bernina you will experience the best of the culture and cuisine of both countries, Switzerland and Italy.
Countless nature highlights: Countless highlights await you in the dreamlike nature on this hiking tour: the highest mountains of the canton of Graubünden, an impressive glacier world, the Stazerwald, Pontresina on the Bernina Pass, the crystal-clear Palpuognasee in the Albula Alps, as well as the 136-metre-long Landwasser Viaduct.
Interesting facts about hiking along the Via Albula and Bernina
This hiking tour Via Albula & Bernina is assigned to our hiking type 'Hiking'. The daily stages are planned with three to six hours and can be managed with a good basic condition. Some of the hiking trails are narrow or somewhat rocky, for which we recommend surefootedness and good shoes. Particularly pleasant: The hiking stages can also be shortened by taking the Rhaetian Railway in some cases.
From Domleschg, a spectacular path leads through the Schin-Gorge. The ascent to the hamlet of Muldain is rewarded with a magnificent view. The Solis viaduct and the 8th-century church of St. Peter in Mistail are other highlights of this hike.
The second stage leads to one of the highlights of the Via Albula/Bernina, the imposing Landwasser Viaduct. Before that, it's along the foaming Albula and on the "Wasserweg ansaina" to one of the photo points for a souvenir photo of the world-famous RhB viaduct.
Then to Filisur with its historic village centre. Past the dancing witches of Bellaluna, the trail climbs to the best-preserved historic railway station, Stugl. The end point Bergün with its Engadine houses and railway museum is considered a Mecca for railway enthusiasts.
Hiking through a true masterpiece of engineering. The mountain hiking trail to Preda follows the course of the Albula and crosses the railway line several times, which has the most foolhardy routing in this section. The railway experience trail explains this hundred-year-old railway engineering art.
After Preda, the mountain trail leads past the crystal-clear Palpuognasee lake via Alp Weissenstein or Crap Alv to Fuorcla Crap Alv and steeply down into Val Bever to idyllic Spinas. From here, continue by train to St. Moritz.
Through moorland and alpine pastures to the Bernina Pass. Highlight follows highlight. Stazerwald, Pontresina, Morteratsch glacier world, Lago Bianco-Lej Nair watershed and the highest mountains in Graubünden.
After Lago Bianco, which is coloured whitish by the glacier water, we head up to the fantastic vantage point of Sassal Mason with a view of Piz Palü with its almost tangible glacier, the heart-shaped Lagh da Palü, Alp Grüm and the Val Poschiavo.
The idyllic high valley of Cavaglia invites you to linger and the detour to the elaborately made accessible glacier mills is well worth it. Like the Rhaetian Railway, the hiking trail winds down the slope to the Poschiavo valley floor.
Along the way, the massive curved Brusio viaduct will amaze you. The varied route leads through orchards, chestnut groves and vineyards to Italy. S. Perpetua in Tirano gives an excellent overview of the Mediterranean landscape and the town with its venerable palazzi.
